BREEAM and embodied carbon
BREEAM addresses embodied carbon through life cycle assessment in the Materials category — principally the Mat 01 life cycle impacts credits — rather than as a single standalone carbon target. The assessment compares the whole-life environmental impacts of your building's structure and fabric, which is why the modelling has to start while the structural option is still open.
What the assessment needs from you
- A defined structural and fabric option set to compare, not a single frozen design.
- Quantities for the assessed elements — substructure, superstructure, envelope, internal finishes as applicable.
- Product and material data consistent with recognised environmental product declarations where available.
- The LCA carried out with a tool and scope acceptable under your registered scheme version.
Where embodied carbon is actually reduced
- Build less. Reuse of existing structure beats every material substitution — which is why refurbishment routinely outperforms new build on embodied carbon.
- Structural option choice. Frame and slab decisions dominate the result; they are settled early.
- Material specification. Cement replacement, steel sourcing and fabric build-ups matter, but at a smaller scale than structure.
- Durability and adaptability. Longer service life and adaptable layouts reduce whole-life impact and pick up related credits.
